Creative Projects Teach Positive Skills for Youth at KVC Wheatland Hospital

KVC Wheatland teaches positive skills for youth.

Winters in western Kansas can bring freezing temperatures, closed highways and large amounts of snow. Not much activity happens except for hunkering down inside and patiently awaiting the first signs of spring.

Youth receiving psychiatric treatment at KVC Wheatland Hospital in Hays, Kan. have enjoyed a couple creative activities to learn positive skills during the winter months. Youth used their love of baking to make “cope cakes.” Each child or teen took a cupcake holder and wrote a coping skill they use on the inside of it. Their creations were then posted on the wall and serve as a fun reminder of the skills they need to regulate their behavior and emotions.

Campaign

With the U.S. presidential election campaign ramping up this year, the youth also decided to put together a KVC campaign. Kids imagined they were running for office and wrote down reasons why they would vote for themselves. This gave the youth a chance to think about their strengths and the positive traits they possess.
