Leaders from KVC Hospitals, Inc. presented at the 2014 Kansas Suicide Prevention Summit on September 11, 2014 in Salina, KS.
James Roberson, LMSW, Kim O’Connor-Soule, LSCSW and Derrick Hurst, LMSW presented on a new innovative practice: the Emotion Regulation Development Tools. The Emotion Regulation Development Tools are designed to expand traditional coping strategies to be more preventative, engaging, inter-personal and developmentally appropriate. Each tool can be utilized to build protective factors as well as respond to active mood disruption and suicidal risk.
Difficulty regulating emotional states is related to many disorders associated with youth suicidality including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress and addictive disorders. Participants were able to observe the tools in use and gain awareness of the importance of emotion-focused interventions for children and teens that may be struggling to work through difficult experiences. The innovative Emotion Regulation Development Tools were created at KVC. KVC Hospitals regularly provides training and consultations services.
